India is all set to get its first sports university in Manipur. The Union Cabinet has approved an ordinance for setting up of a sports university in the country in Imphal, Manipur. And, on Friday the Indian President Ram Nath Kobind has given his assent to the ordinance.
The National Sports University will set up to promote sports education. The focus will be mainly on sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching. Also, the university will be functioning as the national training center for select sports disciplines by adopting the best international practices.
The National Sports University Bill, 2017 was introduced last year. The National Sports Ordinance, 2018 will be on the lines of the same.
“A void exists in the sports environment of the country in various areas such as sports science, sports technology, high performance training,” the bill stated.
The proposal for setting up of the National Sports University was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Also, Rs 100 crore was allocated in the budget for the year 2014-15. 325.90 acres of land has been allocated in the west Imphal district of Koutruk, by the Government of Manipur.
However, vandalism also took place at the newly opened administrative head office of the newly-opened National Sports University. The SP of Imphal East district K Meghachandra Singh said to NDTV, India, “The students smashed furniture, broke computers, tables and chairs of the varsity located at Manipur Olympic House on Friday.”
