India is a country with diversified cultures and heritage. But as per the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Pune is the best city to live in India.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had conducted a survey of various cities as per the ease of living. The survey was mainly based on four parameters.
The four parameters are governance, social institutions, economic and physical infrastructure. The economic survey also included the job opportunities in the cities. These four parameters are further divided into 15 categories and 78 indicators.
This is the first time that this kind of exercise has been undertaken by the ministry to rank the country’s major cities.
Delhi’s rank was as low as 65. Maharashtra has four cities in the top 10 namely, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Greater Mumbai and Thane. The top 10 list comprised of Chandigarh as the only union territory. Rampur in Uttar Pradesh ranked lowest in the survey.
Three West Bengal cities did not participate in the survey. These three cities are Howrah, New Town Kolkata and Durgapur.
As per Hindustan Times, on releasing the index, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said,
“the assessment was first of its kind globally in terms of scale and coverage, and the ranking marks a shift to a data-driven approach to urban planning and management and promotes healthy competition among cities.”
