Somnath Chatterjee dies at 89

Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha speaker died on Monday in Kolkata. The veteran political leader and parliamentarian suffered from a massive heart attack and took his last breath on Monday, 8.10 am.

Chatterjee suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke last month, but was discharged after a treatment of 40 days.

Twitter was blown away with a large number of tweets with condolences and prayers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweets, “Former MP and Speaker Shri Somnath Chatterjee was a stalwart of Indian politics. He made our Parliamentary democracy richer and was a strong voice for the well-being of the poor and vulnerable. Anguished by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters.

Our Honorable President RamNath Kovind also tweeted the following

“Sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha and a veteran parliamentarian who had a forceful presence in the House. A loss for public life in Bengal and India. My condolences to his family and innumerable well-wishers.”

Somnath Chatterjee was a political leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) from 1968 to 2008. He was a Member of Parliament for Bolpur from 1985 to 2009, for twenty four long years.  He was the 13th speaker of Lok Sabha and was in office for four years from 2004 to 2009.

Chatterjee won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in the year 1996. And also was honored with the Living Legend Award at the Bharat Nirman Awards.

Somnath Chatterjee held a master’s degree in Law from Calcutta University. He was one of the very few leaders with fine educational backgrounds. We need more of such leaders in the country.
